Charting a course to a sustainable future -
Our world is facing an incredible array of environmental challenges. These challenges arise from local and regional issues such as pollution and land-use pressure, to global issues such as resource depletion and greenhouse gas induced climate change. In turn, climate change, environmental degradation and resource mismanagement and depletion can severely challenge our ability to create sustainable, robust and equitable economies and societies.
I do not, however, see our world as all doom and gloom. I see that the environment and sustainability challenges that we face have brought together people from different nations, social and economic strata, from universities, from government and from the business world in a multitude of efforts to confront these issues. Never before have so many sectors been so engaged in finding environmental and sustainability solutions. We have now a rare chance to create not just a better environment, but a more sustainable and vigorous economy and society.
For the past 25 years I have been researching, writing, teaching students and working on documentaries and broadcasts about environmental and environmental change issues. On July 1st, 2009 I became the Director of the UCLA Institute of the Environment. I feel privileged to work with such a talented and dedicated group of faculty, staff and students in tackling some of the preeminent problems of the 21st century. My goals as Director are to increase and disseminate knowledge about the environmental sustainability challenges we face, form partnerships between scholars, government agencies, policy makers and the private sector to develop environmentally and economically sustainable solutions to those challenges, and to educate new generations to take up these challenges in ways we may not even be able to imagine today.
I hope you too will join in these efforts to chart a course to a sustainable future! To learn more about me and my work please visit the rest of this site. To learn about the exciting programs at the UCLA Institute of the Environment please visit -
